Robert Townsend (known as Samuel Culper, Jr or 723) was a spy in Benjamin Tallmadge's Culper Spy Ring during the Revolutionary War. Raised as a pacifist and a Quaker, he was pulled into war through the influence of Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" & the harassment of his family by British troops.
Operating out of the British controlled New York City, he was able to gather information by blending in with officers & refugees in social spaces. Among his many intelligence contributions are the uncovering of a plot by the British to devalue the newly created American currency through counterfeiting & helping discover Benedict Arnold's treason. He was so secretive and adamant that no one knew his identity within the spy ring until his journals were discovered after he passing in 1838.
